Andy Weir Returns with “Artemis”

The bestselling author of "The Martian" returns with a new near-future thriller—a heist story set on the moon.

Jasmine Bashara, aka Jazz, is just another too-smart, directionless twentysomething, chafing at the constraints of her small town and dreaming of a better life. Except the small town happens to be named Artemis—and it’s the first and only city on the moon. This is the premise of Andy Weir’s new novel, a near-future thriller, which boasts an adrenaline-charged crime story with smart and detailed world-building. What is even better is that like Weir’s first book, the best-selling The Martian, the new book is also based on real science.

Weir confesses: “I’m really excited about ARTEMIS. I got to do the science-dork stuff I love, but this time with a much more complex and character-driven plot. It’s a big stretch for me, but I think it came out well. Hopefully the readers will agree.”

And indeed, ARTEMIS promises to acquaint readers with a new protagonist, every bit as memorable as Mark Watney from THE MARTIAN. A strong Mark Watney-esque female protagonist? I’m game!

Synopsis

Jazz Bashara is a criminal.

Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you’re not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you’ve got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.

Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she’s stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

According to the Crown Publishing Group, ARTEMIS is set for publication in print and digital formats, in the United States and Canada, on November 14, 2017. The publisher also simultaneously released the book’s iconic jacket image.
