Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer is Out

They are here: the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the movie poster, and both look promising

Have you also been waiting to find out what happened out there on the cliff, after Rey meets Luke Skywalker? We certainly have. Now, the teaser trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, the 8th movie in George Lucas’ franchise has been released to the net. The trailer was unveiled during the 40th anniversary celebrations for “Star Wars,” which are being held from April 13th to the 17th.

So without further ado, watch the trailer and we’ll continue afterwards:

Granted, it’s a short trailer, but it is very satisfying in terms of creating a sense of anticipation. From this brief peek we can understand that Rey is indeed expected to receive from Luke training and explanations which she apparently came to ask of him at the end of the seventh movie, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. We can also see Poe, in his pilot attire and several hints of the sort of space battles which have become one of the most familiar trademarks of the franchise (even giving it its name), as well as FN2187, aka Fin, or the traitor stormtrooper, who is still unconscious.

But the highlight of the trailer is, of course, the short dialogue between Rey and Luke. The hermit Jedi invites the girl to breath and “reach out,” and asks her what she sees. To this, Rey answers: “Light… Dark… Balance.”

Interpretation and Theories

Is Rey’s answer a direct reference to the prophecy which Qui Gon Jinn and Obi One Kenobi thought referred to Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader)? Luke’s reaction suggests that… yes.

“It’s so much bigger!” What is bigger? The Balance. Bigger than what? Than either the light or the dark. Why is this important? Because of Luke’s next words: “I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end.” Why does Luke want the Jedi order to end? After all, was he not the one who marked the return of the Jedi? If it’s up to us to guess, taking it from the man himself – because the Jedi represent only one side of the force, like the Sith who are (or were) the other side. The balance, however, is bigger than both. Therefore, my guess is that Luke Skywalker is the last Jedi, while Rey, under his guidance, is the one who will bring balance to the force.

If all of these assumptions are true, what will remain for the ninth movie? Up until now, the “Star Wars” franchise progressed in trilogies. Therefore, it may be presumed that the things I’ve just mentioned will be revealed in the eighth movie, but it will be primarily dedicated to Rey’s training as that balancing influence on the force. In the meantime, in the galaxy, outside of her secluded training site, the frame story with Poe, Kylo Ren and the ridiculously named “Snoke”, will continue to develop towards an epic confrontation. The beginning of the confrontation will occur near the end of the eighth movie, and the ninth movie will show the rest of the confrontation, its conclusion and consequences and balance will come to the force. Out of that balance, something new will arise, neither Jedi nor Sith.
